By "Hebraism" I don't mean Judaism, though it of course originates in Judaism, and I don't mean to suggest that "Hellenism" is the province of non-Jews. Obviously high-achieving Jews exhibit this value, to define oneself through excellence and achievement, as much or more than others. <br />As for putting his name on things, Trump has taken it to a whole new level. I think there's even a name for the obsession, maybe a -philia, but I can't find it.Dennis Dalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03233729780363740881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16017668.post-90804950553291259322015-10-10T10:32:20.231-07:002015-10-10T10:32:20.231-07:00"Even in his obsessive branding, putting the ..."Even in his obsessive branding, putting the Trump name on everything he builds, he exhibits a core element of the Greek value of arete, where the highest goal is to make one's name immortal--as opposed to the Hebrew goal of making the soul immortal, in part by eschewing just this sort of Hellenistic "vanity."<br /><br />Interesting point - but then how would you explain the modern Jewish American obsession (it may be older and exist elsewhere, but I'm not aware of it) of putting their names on everything? Buying plaques in a synagogue to memorialize someone, donating vast sums to endow Jewish-named buildings at historical protestant institutions, and setting up luxury retail firms with dissonantly Jewish names (can't recall now, but there was a luxury clothing store in Dallas named something like Goldblatt).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16017668.post-26254841689074021002015-10-08T07:26:29.385-07:002015-10-08T07:26:29.385-07:00I don't foresee Trump lasting much past Iowa, ...I don't foresee Trump lasting much past Iowa, but good post. It is true that Trump has at least a single policy that GOP voters believe in.SpottedToadhttp://this.that.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16017668.post-53397005628175130182015-10-08T02:38:38.973-07:002015-10-08T02:38:38.973-07:00Thanks, I've corrected it.Thanks, I've corrected it.Dennis Dalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03233729780363740881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16017668.post-5283434151498564312015-10-07T20:38:41.345-07:002015-10-07T20:38:41.345-07:00"Judgment," but hellz yeah!"Judgment," but hellz yeah!DiverCityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07475857314061951650noreply@blogger.com
